NYFW // Katy Gallagher S/S 2013
My first show at the Spring 2013 edition of New York Fashion Week was of Katy Gallagher’s Spring 2013 collection. Held at the trendy Standard Hotel, it was the first of many shows that featured black and white as the designer’s main color palette.
The collection was presented on a white powered runway in a small, hot room with live music. The people-watching was just as interesting as the clothing presented, and read as a preview of what was to come down the runway. Dark, moody, and edgy, with a hint of goth was the theme for this show both in the crowd and on the podium.
Gallagher’s collection of swimsuits, gowns, and separates stayed true to her gothic aesthetic, and were completely void of colour. All the looks stayed completely neutral and were styled in one of two ways; head to toe black or top to bottom creme. I loved the minimalist approach with the natural fabrics (silk, lamb skin, and kangaroo) and cuts (peplums, thigh high cuts, crops and cutouts) doing all the talking. The asymmetrical hem lines and “undone” futuristic collection left me describing the girl Katie’s designing for as goth girl meets minimalist.
Favorite look: Assemetrical high-low white dress with gorgeous silver coral ear cuff
Trend watch: Monochramtic black and white, neutrals, assymetrical hem lines, and mixed textures
